Nutrition Support

When an individual suffers from a disease of the gastrointestinal tract, they may experience problems absorbing enough nutrients to prevent malnutrition. Nutrition support also benefits those who have trouble swallowing or who are suffering from malnutrition.

Patients receive special nutrition either through a needle or catheter to their veins, or through a feeding tube into their stomach. These ways of delivering nutrition are called either parenteral nutrition (through the veins) or enteral nutrition (through a feeding tube.)

Our nutrition support team helps patients lead fuller, richer lives. We provide this service for those being cared for at home, in senior living facilities or where individuals are receiving rehabilitation.

Nutrition services are appropriate for people with:

  • Diabetes
  • High-risk pregnancy
  • Renal disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Cancer
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Pre and post-transplant

Benefits

  • Our staff educates patients, families and caregivers about parenteral and enteral nutritional care.
  • Our staff is involved in research to increase knowledge about clinical nutrition and metabolism.
  • All lab work is provided directly to the patient's physician each morning, saving time and phone calls.
  • Our nutrition care provides adequate energy and protein to meet hypermetabolic demands, decrease catabolism and prevent protein and calorie malnutrition; this increases patients’ ability to combat infection and accelerates wound healing.
  • Our pharmacists have direct access to patients' lab reports, radiology reports and surgical reports; this allows them to understand the patient's condition immediately.
  • On-call clinicians have round-the-clock access to patient data and medical records, which enables them to make immediate decisions rather than wait until business hours.

Patient safety standards

  • A monitoring device attached to the pump module enhances the safety of our automatically compounded TPN. During compounding, the system immediately stops and an alarm will sound if an incorrect solution type is detected.
  • Our two-chamber container for TPN solutions provides maximum stability by keeping the IV lipid emulsion separate from other TPN solutions' components until the bag is ready to be used. A pull tab makes it simple to mix the contents of the two chambers.
